Arterial Trees Typeface

Typography 2

Adobe Illustrator / Adobe After Effects

This was a typeface I had created for my Typography 2 class. I wanted to create something more on the fun side, rather than making something you’d utilize for an body copy.

I created this based off the thin lines and piping of the human cardiovascular system. Originally this had started with me creating small branches with leaves, however, this quickly became cluttered.

I decided to simplify the design and combine my love of science with design to create this unique typeface.

For the early stages of this project, I had to create 50 different thumbnails for the letter “D”.

I played with different shapes, loops, dots, and more. Once those were created I narrowed it down to 3 for an in-class critique.

Afterwards, I had to use those concepts to create a fully fleshed out alphabet. Those examples can be found below.

After narrowing it down to one of the alphabets, I had to transfer the paper and pen creation over to a digital format.

This was the final layout for that typeface.

This was a very unique project and it is something that I didn’t think I’d get the chance to do. It certainly adds something unique to my portfolio.
